The Goddess VENUS
Today we think of Venus as the Goddess of Love and Beauty. Originally, however, she
was a vegetation Goddess and patroness of vineyards and gardens. Known as the
“Queen of Heaven”, Venus was closely associated with growth and nature. Not until
the Greeks equated her with Aphrodite did Venus become the Goddess of Love –
especially sensual love. It is interesting to knot that many images of Venus are identical
to those of Aphrodite.
In mythical history, Venus is the daughter of Jupiter. Her affairs with Mars and Vulcan
were modeled after those of Aphrodite. Her importance was strongly influenced by
Roman political leaders. Venus was named the patroness of the dictator Sulla and
Julius Caesar claimed her as an ancestor of the Julian family.
The oldest known temple dedicated to Venus was inaugurated on August 18, 293 BCE.
Vinalia Rustic was later observed on this same date. Veneralia, a second festival
honouring Venus was celebrated on April 1. Emperor Hadrianus built the last great
temple of Venus in 135 CE near the Coliseum.
The second planet from the sun in our solar system is named after the Goddess Venus.
Also called the Morning Star, Venus is most visible in the hours just before sunrise. At
certain times of the year, Venus appears as a brilliant blue-white star.
A mere 41.4 million Km from Earth, the planet Venus orbits the sun clockwise creating
an unusual pattern in relation to our own. Every eight Earth years Venus completes a
unique pentagram in the sky. (www.zebu.voregon,edu) This amazing geometrical
phenomenon represents the source of one of the Goddess’s most common symbols,
the cinquefoil or “Rose of Venus.” (www.altreligion.about.com)
This same symbol was later adopted by Christianity to represent the womb of Mary, the
new Queen of Heaven. Mary and Venus share this symbol and through it some pagans,
clinging to the old ways, secretly worshipped Venus. Roses evolved into a symbol of
love due to their natural beauty, which linked them back to the Goddess through the
cinquefoil.
Sacred to Venus
Venus is said to be present where a large stone is adjacent to a tall tree. This
arrangement in landscaping will create a venue for connection to the Goddess and for
enhancing one’s libido. Simply sit on the stone and rest your back against the tree.
Finding such an arrangement occurring naturally is a powerful alternative if you are
unable to move a large rock into your yard.
There is almost no limit to what can be used to symbolize Venus. She was born out of
sea foam and lays claim to the heavens and everything in it. All plants and all living
things belong to the Goddess. There is virtually nothing that cannot be related to Venus
symbolically.
The month of April and Fridays are sacred to Venus. Love and sex magic is often
performed on a Friday. April, the first full month of Spring, is a time to invoke Venus and
draw on her sensual energy. Veneralia (April 1st) was a celebration of Venus when
Roman women cleansed images of her in rivers or lakes. The images were then
adorned with jewels and given a new robe. Incense was burned before the images of
Venus to ensure good fortune, love, easy birth and happiness.
Venus claims Writing and literature because it was within her temples that the alphabet
began. Numbers, too, connect to the Goddess, especially 3, 5 & 8. Any number with an
astronomical or calendrical significance is sacred to Venus. As well, music written in
the pentatonic scale, wind and string instrumentals, including piano, are all considered
Goddess music sacred to Venus.

Cut a ¼ inch slice from the middle of the apple so you have a circle showing the five-
pointed star in the core. (Cut the apple sideways, not from stem to bottom.)
Purify the apple slice with smoke from incense, candle flame, water and salt.
Lay the apple slice aside on a clean paper towel on a plate. (You will keep this slice.)
While you eat the remainder of the apple, contemplate your intention and visualize
the power of Venus filling you through the apple.
Continue to meditate on your intention.
Raise energy necessary to achieve this goal and release it back to Venus.
Thank the guardians
Thank Venus
Close Circle
Either let the candle burn down and out or put it out now and light it again for a while
each day for the next four days (five days total). Let the apple slice to dry out
completely on your altar. Flip it over now and then to let the other side dry.
On the fifth day, take the remaining wax from the candle and re-melt it. You may add a
few drops of essential oil appropriate to your intention to the melted wax.
Using a needle, draw a piece of yarn (same colour as candle) through the top of the
dried apple slice to form a hanger. Dip the apple slice in the melted wax five times
while you repeat your intention. Hand the apple slice to let the wax harden, then
hand it where you need Venus’ energy to work for you. (Bedroom, office, garden, etc.)
